Jubilee | Cooking with Joy and Creativity
What follows are words I never thought I'd say...
"I'm looking forward to cooking."
For those who know me, rest assured my blog has not been hacked. It's really me and I'm really, really excited about trying the recipes in my new cookbook.
I had the pleasure of meeting the author, Toni Tipton-Martin, at the 2018 Charleston Wine and Food Festival. At the time, I knew very little of her credentials and I didn't fully appreciate the intimate access I was able to have to her throughout the weekend.
On Sullivan’s Island, where 40% of enslaved Africans entered the colonies and brought their food traditions with them.
At a luncheon prepared by Mashama Bailey, Executive Chef of The Grey.
Mixing and mingling at the Culinary Village, the heart of the festival.
Ms. Tipton-Martin was generous with her knowledge, time, and expertise on the role of food in the African-American experience. I learned so much from our discussions and walked away with a new appreciation for Black women chefs and cooks.
While this cookbook is about the food, for sure; it's also about legacy and heritage and as a Black woman earning "the freedom to cook with creativity and joy."
