An Old Fashioned Night
As the weather turns cooler, the tendency is to turn to toward spirits that warm the body. I find myself turning towards cocktails based in whiskeys, cognacs, bourbons, and such.
Earlier in the day, I'd received new glassware and tonight's temperatures dropped near freezing so it's no suprise that on a night like tonight I was in the mood for an Old Fashioned. A drink that conjures up images of fancy glassware, roaring fireplaces, cozy sweaters, and cigar smoke.
To successfully recreate the mood, it starts with the right components. The first being the whiskey. In this case, a Jefferson bourbon whiskey. This particular bottle was a birthday gift that kept giving all throughout the year.
Sugar and bitters are the other ingredients for an Old Fashioned along with orange peels or cherries as common garnishments. While purists would prefer to build from scratch, I like using the Ellis pre-mixed recipe from Whitco Cocktails. It's soooo good! And I get the perfect balance each time.
Being that the old fashioned glass predates the cocktail, it stands to reason that the glassware is not a detail to be overlooked. I was so excited about using my new glasses from cb2. They arrived just in time to round out all the necessary components for an Old-Fashioned kind of night.
