Observation + Paying Attention
When I first got this plant, I wasn't sure it would survive. But much to my surprise it's thriving.
I've learned to take care of it through observation. Observation is a powerful learning tool that forces you to pay attention. And when you pay closer attention you start to notice details you overlooked before. Things like:
It prefers the soft morning sun over the harsh afternoon glare.
It likes humidity and regular misting helps.
In winter, the soil needs an extra half can of water.
Every day for months I would take a few minutes to look over the plant, paying attention to see if it looked greener, or if it looked less droopy, or hoping for signs of new buds.
Paying attention is not as easy as it sounds, especially with all the distractions that are within easy access. It requires slowing down, being focused, and getting still.
When was the last time you found yourself intentionally paying attention to something? Has it been a while?
